Primary and Secondary school teacher salary in Kenya: How much does a secondary school teacher earn in Kenya?

After the fourth phase of the new CRB was implemented by the Teachers Service Commission in 2021, secondary Teacher II (teachers in Secondary schools whose grade is C2 (formerly group; Grade C2 is an entry grade for Kenya secondary school teachers who are holders of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or its educational equivalent. It is also a promotional grade for the holders of a Diploma in Education.) started earning basic monthly salaries of Ksh 34,955 -49,694.

Distinctly, teachers earn an equal amount of commuter allowance, which is KSh. 5,000.

Here are the newly revised salaries that teachers have been earning since July 2021 according to the Education Hub; Primary and the Secondary school teacher salary: :

CHIEF PRINCIPALS (T- Scale 15)

These are school Principals in National and also Extra County Schools with over 1000 students who earned a salary of between KSh121,814 and KSh157,656 per month. These teachers got a salary increment of up to KSh9,496. The lowest earner in this job group got a salary of KSh131,380, while the highest earner in this group got KSh157,656 per month.

SENIOR PRINCIPALS (T- Scale 14)

Senior secondary school Principals head County Schools with over 540 students. These Principals received a monthly salary of between Sh109,249 and Sh118,169. In addition, they got an increase of between KSh3,721 and also KSh8,993 to earn a monthly perk of Ksh118,242 and 121,890 per month.

PRINCIPALS (T- Scale 13)

These are teacher Principals heading Sub- County and All Day schools who earned salaries between Sh93,850 and Sh102,807 per month. The lowest earner in this job category got an increase of Sh10,794 to earn a new salary of about KSh104,644, while the highest earner got a top-up of KSh1,837 to get a new monthly wage of KSh104,644.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS III

These are administrators of the Sub- County and All Day schools who earned a monthly salary of between KSh82,717 and KSh87,900. The lowest earner in this grade got a monthly pay of Sh91,041, while the highest earner got KSh91,041 after receiving an increment of Sh8,324 and KSh3,141, respectively.

SENIOR HEAD TEACHERS, SENIOR MASTER II, AND DEPUTY PRINCIPALS IV

Senior Head Teachers head primary schools with an enrollment of over 1000 learners with job Grade D1 (T- Scale 11). At the same time, Senior Master II with job Grade D1 (T- Scale 11) are administrators in County Schools with over 540 students. These administrators earned a salary of between Sh74,703 and Sh82,717 per month and got a wage increment of up to Sh3,137.

HEAD TEACHERS, DEPUTY HEAD TEACHER I, AND SENIOR MASTER III

Head Teachers head primary schools with a student enrollment of below 1000 learners with job Grade C5 (T- Scale 10). While Deputy Head Teacher I at Grade C5 (T- Scale 10) are administrators in all Kenyan Primary schools with an enrollment of over 1000 learners. On the other hand, Senior Master III of Grade C5 (the T- Scale 10) are administrators in Sub- County and All Day schools in Kenya. The lowest earners in this group (who earned a monthly pay of KSh51,632) got a raise to pocket KSh62,272.

DEPUTY HEADTEACHER II

Deputy Head Teachers of II Grade C4 (the T- Scale 9) are administrators in Primary schools with an enrollment of below 1000 learners. These teachers received monthly perks of between KSh45,287 and Ksh51,632.

SECONDARY TEACHER I AND SENIOR TEACHER I

Secondary Teachers, I are also teachers in Secondary schools whose grade is C3 (formerly L); This is a promotional upgrade for teachers in secondary school. On the other hand, the Senior Teacher I are administrators in Primary schools with an enrollment of over 1000 learners with a Grade C3 job group. These tutors earned monthly salaries of KSh41,343- KSh51,927; they got a raise to make between KSh43,154 and Sh53,943.

SENIOR TEACHER II, SECONDARY TEACHER II & SECONDARY TEACHER II UNTRAINED (UT) AND PRIMARY SNE TEACHERS.

Senior Teacher II are school administrators in Primary schools with an enrollment of below 1000 learners. At the same time, the Secondary Teacher III is an entry grade for secondary school teachers who are holders of a Diploma in Education. These teachers earned wages of between Ksh31,242 and KshS 33,971 and got an increment of between Ksh 984 to Ksh 3,717.

SECONDARY TEACHER II & SECONDARY TEACHER II UNTRAINED AND PRIMARY SNE TEACHERS.

These teachers who fall in the Grade C2 (Formerly K category) did not receive any salary increment. Grade C2 is an entrance grade for secondary school teachers who are also holders of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or its equivalent. It is additionally a promotional grade for holders of a Diploma in Education. They earned between KSh. 31,000 and KSh. 43,000 per month.

PRIMARY TEACHER I AND SECONDARY TEACHER III

These are teachers in the grade C1 (Formerly H and J). Grade C1 category is an entry grade for secondary school teachers who are also holders of Diploma in Education. They took home between KSh. 19,000 and KSh. 33,000.

PRIMARY TEACHER II

These are all teachers at Grade B5 (group T- Scale 5), which is the entry grade for primary school teachers. They made between KSh. 16,000 and KSh. 27,000. Primary and Secondary school teacher salary.
