Kenya is a multi-ethnic nation in the Great Lakes region of East Africa with tens of tribes. It has a very diverse population that incorporates most major ethnic, racial and linguistic groups located in Africa. Bantu and Nilotic populations jointly constitute around 97% of the nation’s residents, with some Cushitic-speaking ethnical minorities in the north. Kenya’s largest and one of the most populous ethnic groups is the Kikuyu, making up close to a fifth of the entire country’s population. For a country whose politics have been marked by ethnic tensions and rivalry between the bigger groups, coming from a very populous tribe is a major win, more so for a presidential candidate position.
